The votes have been cast; the numbers have been tabulated. It is time to announce the winners of this year's Fessenden awards. Before we get to the results, here are some general and statistical notes relating to the survey.
First some comparative figures versus last year's survey. We received a total of 63 survey responses; that is just 7 more than last year. Last year's split was 30 entries by e-mail, 26 by regular mail. This year the split is 46 by e-mail, 17 by regular mail. Increased access to e-mail and the Internet, in Africa and Asia in particular, was noted.
Entries were submitted from 19 countries, an increase of one over last year. We are pleased to have received entries from Canada, the United States, Trinidad, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, India, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Romania and Venezuela.
Votes were tabulated in the following manner. First choice votes were awarded 3 points 2nd place votes received 2 points, and 3rd place votes got 1 point. A number of people submitted more than three choices in various categories. Only the top three were recognized and awarded points.
Of particular interest this year was the wide variety of choices in each of the categories. This reflects the diversity in tastes and preferences of the shortwave listeners around the world. Many of you took time to supply detailed reasons for your choices, which made for most interesting reading. A selection of your comments will follow the survey results. So, let's get on to the winners. Congratulations to all.

Paul Brouillette, Geneva, Illinois, USA: (In response to question 10 about websites) "Here I can make no choices. As a general rule, I do not use the Internet due to security and privacy concerns. Even if I did use the Internet, however, my main interest is shortwave radio, and the Internet is not radio! I equally enjoy the programming as well as the technical aspects and science involved in transmission and propagation of RF signals. It also bothers me that what is available on the Internet is available only to the relatively wealthier classes of people. Therefore it does not and cannot serve everyone, as true broadcasting is supposed to do."
Terry Robinson, Woodend, Victoria, Australia: (In response to question 10) "I was unable to answer Question 10 as I do not have a computer. Computers are very expensive in Australia and a news report last week indicated that usage of the Internet in this state is virtually zero. Obviously when a laptop can cost all the way up to $4000 Australian, not many people can afford them."
John Figliozzi, Clifton Park, New York, USA: "Good questions, in my humble opinion, except for #4, which perhaps should be broken out to at least three separate questions, if not more. Picking one for these categories is nearly impossible. Great idea, though. There should be more of these surveys."
Jonathan Murphy, Cork, Ireland: (In response to question 5 Favourite mailbag programme) "a) Radio Prague Mailbox, two young presenters always in good humour; b) Swiss Radio International Capital Letters, and c) Maple Leaf Mailbag, the most extraordinary one man show on the radio!"
Thank you once again to everyone who took the time to participate, and congratulations to all the stations, programmes and personalities nominated. Most importantly, thank you to all the international broadcasters around the world whose dedicated efforts continue to bring enjoyment, knowledge and entertainment to the shortwave listening community of the world. Your work is deeply appreciated.
On a final note, as promised, one lucky participant in the survey has been chosen to receive a one-year membership in the Canadian International DX Club. Your membership begins with this issue. The winner is Mr. Michael Kallstrom of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Congratulations.
Until next year ...
